Cumulative Effect of Ransomware Should Be Taken Seriously
Ransomware is malware that is utilized by cybercriminals to continuously block access to important data systems and demanding payment for file decryption. According to Lindy Cameron, head of UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ, ransomware is the biggest threat to businesses and will create a cumulative effect in the United Kingdom if society fails to properly address the problem in cybersecurity. She made mention that these criminal gangs are technically advanced professionals to attack large profitable businesses that cannot afford to lose their data or suffer downtime while services are offline.
At Carbis Bay, Cornwall, the world leaders recently conducted a G7 summit to discuss ransomware attacks. The incident that happened in the fuel pipeline operator was reported as one of the most disruptive digital ransomware operations. It has drawn attention to the leaders to urgently address the escalating ransomware criminal network operating groups. At the end of the summit, G7 emphasized that no country is safe for ransomware criminals. World leaders were calling all states to identify the ransomware criminals and help disrupt their activities. It was clear in the summit that states should hold the ransomware operators within the borders and hold them accountable for their actions. Russia was also called to investigate and explain the use of chemical weapons on its soil, end the systematic crackdown on independent civil society, and punish those who conduct ransomware attacks.
Lindy Cameron mentioned in her speech that “criminals don’t exist in a vacuum. They are often enabled and facilitated by states acting with impunity” Ransomware attacks are the work of cybercriminals and these activities are not state-sponsored. All countries across the world should know the danger brought by criminal gangs and should never allow them to make millions of dollars.
