The new trend in cybercrime is worrisome as it includes a wide variety of cyberattack types that target the real-life health of victims. This new hacker’s concept is called Killware.

What is Killware? We are already familiar with the terms malware and ransomware, these are cyberattacks targeting our private data and money. Killware is the newest cybersecurity threat and it is indeed scary because it causes serious physical harm or even death. Hackers started this latest trend after the cyberattack on a water plant in Oldsmar, Florida. They managed to get into the plant’s computer system and control it, fortunately, some irregularities were noticed and they managed to stop the process.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has identified several killware targets, including:

  • Hospitals
  • Water Supplies
  • Power Grids
  • Oil and Gas Supplies
  • Aviation
  • Food Supply Chains
  • Banks
  • Police and Fire Departments
  • Transportation Infrastructure
  • Emergency Response Systems

What can you do to protect yourself?

You might be wondering if you should be concerned about this. As of the moment, no killware attack has been successful...yet. However, undoubtedly, this kind of cyber attack will escalate over the coming years.

There are some basic safety measures you should take to improve your cybersecurity.

  1. Use Encryption VPN Service - Your data will be unreadable even if you are using a public WIFI network.
  2. Update All your Devices -  Hackers infect your phone or laptop with malware. To avoid these, always keep your devices up to date, install patches and updates as soon as they are released.
  3. Use Antivirus Software - To complete your cyber security, always consider installing Antivirus in your system.

An unsecured network makes it easier for malicious hackers to take control of your devices. To detect these potential killware attacks we need to have Full network visibility.
